From Jiangyou to the World: An Eternal Young Hero

Mythological Origins: A Magnificent Epic

The story of Nezha originates from the Dunhuang murals along the ancient Silk Road and is widely known in the novel *Investiture of the Gods*. He was originally a celestial general who descended to earth to subdue demons, becoming the third son of Li Jing, the general of Chen Tang Pass. From his birth as a lotus flower, to his straightforward courage in "stirring up trouble in the sea" by pulling out the dragon's tendons, to his resolute commitment to "returning his bones to his father and his flesh to his mother," he ultimately, with the help of his master, the Immortal Taiyi, was reborn from a lotus root, aiding the Zhou dynasty in its conquest of the Shang dynasty and achieving righteousness.

The earliest mention of Nezha in Tang Dynasty Buddhist scriptures is that he is called "Nezha," the son of the Heavenly King Shaman, who holds a golden pestle and serves to protect the Buddha's teachings. At that time, caravans traveling the Silk Road would silently chant "Nezha, protector" when encountering bandits or sandstorms. It is said that once a caravan got lost in the desert and suddenly saw a boy riding a wind-fire wheel (later people said it was "Buddha's light manifesting"), and following him led them out of the desert—this is Nezha's earliest "protective energy," protecting "peace and hope."

During the Song and Yuan dynasties, people incorporated Nezha into Taoism, bestowing upon him the title "Zhongyuan." At that time, if a village was plagued by an epidemic or children were frequently ill, people would place an image of Nezha in their courtyard and light incense. An old book records that in a village in Jiangnan, children suffered from a strange illness. The village elders said, "Invite Nezha here." As a result, one night, a child in one household dreamed that Nezha swept across the courtyard with his magic ribbon, and the next day the child was cured. From this time on, Nezha gained the power to "protect children and ward off evil spirits," becoming the guardian deity of every household.

What truly makes Nezha "live" in everyone's hearts is "Investiture of the Gods". You must remember his ruthless act of "returning his bones to his father and his flesh to his mother"—actually, this was not "rebellion", but rather that he did not want to harm his parents and would rather "disappear". What is even more inspiring is that when Taiyi Zhenren gave him a new body made of lotus flowers, he did not seek revenge after returning. Instead, he helped Jiang Ziya to overthrow King Zhou and protect the people of the world.
